Chicago Sinfonietta has been blazing a bold new path in classical music for 37 years, and they’re still just getting started!
Since 1987, Chicago Sinfonietta has been a defiantly different kind of orchestra: a professional organization dedicated to modeling and promoting diversity, inclusion, and both racial and cultural equity in the arts through the universal language of symphonic music.
In 2011, Maestro Mei-Ann Chen began her tenure with the orchestra (as only the second Music Director in the Sinfonietta’s history). In Maestro Chen’s first season, the Sinfonietta was the recipient of the 2011- 12 Award for Adventurous Programming from ASCAP, and in 2013 it was dubbed, “the city’s hippest orchestra” by the Chicago Tribune, before going on to be honored in 2016 with a prestigious (and significant) MacArthur Foundation funding award. Embracing daring programming has always been part of Sinfonietta’s history and the audience response has been unprecedented. But the orchestra's true legacy, passed on to Maestro Chen and everyone at the Sinfonietta, goes far beyond what you will see onstage.
Paul Freeman, founding Maestro of the Sinfonietta was, throughout his lifetime, a fierce advocate for early-career musicians. Some of the diverse musicians you will see on stage are the direct beneficiaries of this vision and the personal investments Maestro Freeman made in so many people. In 2008, this practice was formalized to create the Project Inclusion Fellowship Program. Chicago Sinfonietta has also supported young musicians in schools through their Audience Matters and SEED (Student Ensembles for Excellence and Diversity) programs.
During its rich history, Chicago Sinfonietta has influenced broad cultural change in the U.S. and emerged as an innovator within the classical music industry by presenting provocative programs and engaging diverse audiences through community partnerships. As the orchestra completes 37 years on the cutting edge of classical music Maestro Freeman’s vision is still relevant today.
