The Joffrey Ballet’s 2016-17 season will open with a remount of the company’s thrilling, multimedia production of Romeo & Juliet.  Internationally renowned choreographer and Director of the Polish National Ballet Krzysztof Pastor creates a unique telling of the romantic tragedy.  This contemporary rendition of the classic Shakespearean tale of star–crossed lovers is set in Italy against a striking multimedia backdrop depicting three different political eras of the twentieth century.  Traversing each time period, the eternal tale of love and loss unfolds to Prokofiev’s formidably dramatic score -- played live by the Chicago Philharmonic.  Bravura dancing, touching lyricism, and epic storytelling unite in this rendering of ill–fated true love.  Pastor’s Romeo & Juliet premiered here in 2014, it is being produced again in conjunction with the citywide Shakespeare 400 Chicago project, celebrating the timeless brilliance of the Bard at the 400th anniversary of his death.

Edward Kelsey Moore will be among the musicians of the Chicago Philharmonic
for these performances.

Summer in the Midwest is a season full of outdoor grilling...
But as sleeves get longer and sweaters reappear it’s time to turn towards the kitchen again and look for a new cookbook to inspire you.  Even if you read far more recipes than actually arrive on your table, a good cookbook can be a fulfilling feast for the imagination!

Along these lines, bestselling author Edward Kelsey Moore (The Supremes At Earl's All-You-Can-Eat) has contributed a favorite dessert recipe and an essay to a most unusual, new cookbook. The Artists' and Writers’ Cookbook: A Collection of Stories with Recipes, by Natalie Eve Garrett (Editor) and Amy Jean Porter (Illustrator) is a modern edition of a collection of the same name which was first published in 1961.  The new version features 76 contemporary artists and writers, each of whom has provided a recipe, and their story.  Some of the recipes are personal versions of comfort food favorites, others are wildly imagined “concepts.”  All the recipes come with stories: serious, fanciful, joyous or sad, to introduce you to the ingredients and instructions.  The editor, Natalie Eve Garrett, describes the ideas that bring the book to life: the connections between art, writing, and cooking make sense -- ideally all three are about making something new, they all require some measure of vision, revision, faith, and magic -- not to mention a high tolerance for disaster.

In addition to E.K.M.’s Apple and Sweet Potato Bars, some of the other recipes and stories: Anthony Doerr lures us out into the wild to find huckleberries and happiness.  Neil Gaiman makes a perfectly eerie cheese omelet while Ed Ruscha associates his cactus omelet with a time of doom.  Edwidge Danticat prepares a soup to celebrate freedom and Nelson DeMille reminisces about a meal he ate 40 years ago when serving in Vietnam.  Kamrooz Aram recalls childhood picnics in his basement in Tehran during air raids and Sanford Biggers updates a soul food classic, something tasty to lessen the bitter taste of consistent, systematic oppression. Marina Abramović shares a dish best consumed on top of a volcano!  Actor/director and author James Franco concocts a meal in his own way -- PB & J, with a pickle on the side and Joyce Carol Oates shares a "Recipe in Defiance of Grief."

Whether it’s your soul or your stomach that hungers, you’re likely to find exactly the ingredients you need!

"The Artists’ and Writers’ Cookbook is far from anything traditional and that’s exactly what makes it so inspiring. There are proper ingredients and measurement listings, yes, but more important are the imaginative, artful narratives conjured up around everyday foods." —Vogue
