![]() With the darkening days, and with winter weather arriving very early this year the pleasure of something bright and unusual would be welcome. Chicago Sinfonietta presents its second annual Diwali concert, Love+Light, amplified this year by themes of musical mythology, familiar traditions and of course, magical color! Listen as cultures combine through Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3 and a reimagined performance of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite (1919) featuring original choreography by Mandala Arts dance ensemble. Experience the virtuosic stylings of renowned guest violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam, and hear the Carnatic musical traditions of southern India fuse with Western classical music! Love+Light also marks another triumphant return — that of guest conductor Sameer Patel, a Sinfonietta Freeman Conducting Fellow alumni. Plus, celebrate the vibrant Diwali holiday pre-show and during the intermission by sampling unique flavors with Somrus Liqueurs, learn a new dance style with artists from Mandala Arts, explore the art and musical instruments of India, and then capture memories with FOTIO! What is Diwali? Diwali is a five-day “festival of lights” celebrated by Indian communities around the world. It celebrates light conquering dark, and good conquering evil. Indians clean their homes and wear their best clothes for Diwali. They also leave their windows open to allow the spirits of their gods to enter. In order to prevent any darkness, every home is lit with diyas. In fact, “Diwali” translates to “rows of lighted lamps.” more info… Edward Kelsey Moore will be among his Sinfonietta colleagues in these concerts.
