Edward Kelsey Moore  ComingTogether : Voices of Race

1/27/2015

From January through April 2015, local libraries, schools and cultural institutions in the northwest suburbs of Chicago will be participating in the sixth annual ComingTogether in Niles Township; a winter program initiative which opens a cultural dialogue among the people who live in the area.  With a population of over 100,000 citizens, Niles Township includes the villages of Skokie, Lincolnwood and Golf, and sections of Morton Grove, Niles and Glenview.

This year, rather than focus on just one local ethnic population, ComingTogether will engage the many diverse cultures of the community by listening to each other with Voices of Race.  At this time of ongoing national and international racial issues, neighbors will use shared definitions of race to communicate with each other and learn how racism affects us all.  Niles Township is a tremendously diverse community; residents hail from many countries and speak more than 90 different languages and dialects.  The ComingTogether program acknowledges this valuable diversity as an opportunity to build knowledge, awareness, and appreciation for the many cultures around us.  Over this winter residents and students are encouraged to read the selected books and take part in the public discussion groups and other activities.

Five books were selected by local libraries for ComingTogether 2015: Voices of Race, including a fiction and nonfiction title, a collection of poetry, two books for younger children and one for teens.  The one fiction title chosen for adult readers is: The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat.

As part of ComingTogether, Edward Kelsey Moore will be participating in discussions of his novel at the Skokie Library on February 4th at 7:00pm, and on February 18th at 10:00am.
Both events are free, please contact the library for information about registration.
